How to Set A Luggage Lock

Most newly-purchased luggage comes with a TSA approved lock, a great way to keep your personal items safe in transit. When purchasing luggage, it may seem like common sense to set the lock, but depending on the bag this can actually be a tricky process. So, how do you set your luggage lock? Here are a few brand-by-brand tips to set your lock and keep your bags secure. Samsonite: As one of the most popular brands of luggage, we frequently encounter questions about how to set Samsonite locks. Depending on your bag, they usually set one of two ways.
  1. Push-Button Locks:
  2. Make sure the plastic or the tab blocking the locking mechanism is removed.
  3. If it is already locked, unlock it with the (0-0-0) factory combination, or the combination already set in the lock.
  4. Select your new combination.
  5. Push and hold in the button, typically toward the dials, and rotate the dials until your selected three digits combination is evident. NOTE**It is important to keep the button pushed in all the way when rotating the dials to make sure that the correct combination is set.**
  6. Once your selected combination shows, release the button.
  7. Place the zippers in the lock slots to double check that your new combination has set.
  8. Place the zippers back in the lock slots, and scramble the dials so only you can unlock your bag.
  9. Lever Locks:
  10. Locate the small lever on your luggage lock. It may be on the outside next to the dials or on the interior side of the lock, which you can access by unzipping the utility zipper of the lining inside the bag.
  11. Release the zippers from their lock slots if you have not already done so. The factory combination is typically (0-0-0).
  12. Select your new 3-digit combination.
  13. Move the small lever from its first position to its second position on the lock. This is usually done by raising or lowering the lever and moving it to either the right or left to hold its position. (Up/Down and Over)
  14. Once the lever has been moved to its second, “lock-setting” position, rotate the 3 dials until they reflect your desired 3 digit combination.
  15. Once your new combination shows, move the small lever on the lock back from the “lock-setting” position to its original position. NOTE**Make sure to remember to place the lever back to its original position, otherwise your selected combination will not be set and one will be set at random as you turn the dials.**
  16. Double check that your lock combination works by replacing and releasing the zipper tabs in the lock slots.
  17. Scramble the dials so that your personal items aren’t stolen.
